Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Safari seasons, wildlife, Zanzibar & Kilimanjaro

There is no single perfect month to visit Tanzania. The best time depends on the experiences you most want: classic wildlife viewing, green landscapes, fewer visitors, birdlife, seasonal migration patterns or time beside the Indian Ocean. Conditions also differ between the northern parks, the southern reserves, the mountains and Zanzibar.

The seasons

June to October: long dry season

This is a popular period for classic game drives. In many safari areas, vegetation becomes more open and animals gather around reliable water sources. Mornings can be surprisingly cool, particularly on early drives or at altitude, while afternoons are often warm. Demand for popular parks and lodges can be high, so early planning is helpful.

November to December: short rains

In many regions, brief showers bring new growth and beautiful variations in light. Travel remains possible, although road and wildlife-viewing conditions vary. For photographers and birdwatchers, this can be an especially atmospheric season.

January to February: warmer months and calving

The southern Serengeti and neighbouring Ndutu area are often associated with the wildebeest calving period, although annual rainfall influences the exact timing and location of herds. It can be an exciting time to observe new life and predator activity from a respectful distance.

March to May: greener landscapes

The long rains commonly fall during this period, especially around April and May, but weather patterns are not uniform. The scenery may be lush, prices or availability can sometimes be more flexible, and certain routes can become muddy or difficult. Lodge operations and travel conditions should be checked individually.

When to see the Great Migration

The migration is a continuous ecological movement, not an event confined to one season. As a broad guide, many herds are in the southern Serengeti around the early-year calving period; they tend to move through central and western areas later in the year; and northern Serengeti river-crossing opportunities are often associated with roughly July to October. These are patterns, never guarantees.

What about Zanzibar?

Zanzibar can work beautifully as a safari extension. June through October is often relatively dry, and January and February can also be attractive. Rainfall, humidity, wind and tides affect individual beaches and activities differently. Ask about the coast that best suits how you like to spend your time.

When to climb Kilimanjaro

January to early March and June to October are commonly selected for comparatively favourable trekking conditions. Temperatures at altitude can be severe at any time, and successful preparation requires much more than choosing a dry month. Work with a suitably qualified climbing operator.

The ideal season is the one that matches your expectations, not simply the busiest month. Serenova can help you compare routes and timing with local partners.
